The Housing Authority publishes its annual rate adjustment: The tenants of Quebec invited to challenge the unfair rent increases!

Quebec, January 25, 2011 - As the Housing Authority today released its estimates of average rent increase for 2011, Coalition for Housing Rights the opportunity to invite all tenants to challenge excessive rent increases. In this intensive period of renewal of leases, it reminds them that reject changes proposed owner is a right.

In the absence of a truly universal and compulsory control of rent, tenants must be vigilant to counter abuse. Over the last decade, property owners have clearly benefited from the housing crisis and a housing market that is to their benefit to improperly adjust the price of their homes. According to the latest data Canada Mortgage and Housing (CMHC) the average cost of rent has shot up 34% in the Quebec City region since 2000, start of the housing shortage.

Upon receipt of notice of rent increase and modification of the lease, Coalition for Housing Rights advises tenants to check with a committee or a housing association Tenants in the region to assess the reasonableness of the increase requested by the owner.

Also, in early February, in order to properly inform tenants of their rights, Coalition will hold six public education workshops on rent increases:
- 1 ^st February at 9:30 19h People's Committee and St. John the Baptist (780 Ste-Claire),

- February 2 at 9:30 am at CCCQSS (301 Street chime) and 19h at LEASE (570, rue du Roi) and

- February 3 at 9:30 and 19h at CLAL (2120, rue Boivin).

The Coalition for Housing Rights is composed of animation and Information Bureau of Quebec metro housing (LEASE) of Committee of citizens of Saint-Sauveur (CCCQSS), the Popular Committee Saint-Jean-Baptiste Committee and housing assistance to tenants (CLAL). It was established in Quebec in 2002.
